TG001Beginner

No plural or articles

Nouns don't change for number; no “a/the”

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • N (no change for one or many)
  • N + number + classifier (to count: TG039)
  • N + classifier + นี้ / นั้น (to make it definite: TG041)

Usage การใช้

Thai nouns never change for singular or plural, and there are no words for ‘a’ or ‘the’. หมา can be ‘a dog’, ‘the dog’, ‘dogs’ or ‘the dogs’. Context decides. When you need to be exact, add a number and classifier, a demonstrative, or a word like หลาย ‘many’.

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. ผมเลี้ยงหมา
    I keep a dog. / I keep dogs.
  2. หมาเห่าทั้งคืน
    The dog barked all night.
  3. ผมมีหมาสองตัว
    I have two dogs.
  4. หมาตัวนั้นน่ารักมาก
    That dog is really cute.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

  • หนึ่ง after a classifier (หมาตัวหนึ่ง) is like ‘a certain dog’ (TG051). It is not needed every time you would say ‘a’ in English.
  • Plural words like พวก (TG003) or reduplication (เด็ก ๆ, TG006) can show a group, but plain nouns are already fine for plurals.
