Kinship terms as pronouns
Address people (even strangers) with kin terms
Structure โครงสร้าง
- พี่ (older sibling: someone a bit older)
- น้อง (younger sibling: someone younger, e.g. waiters)
- ลุง / ป้า / น้า / อา / ตา / ยาย (uncle, aunt, grandparent: older people)
- kin term + name (พี่ต้น, น้องแนน)
Usage การใช้
Thais use kinship terms as pronouns for I and you, even with strangers. Someone slightly older is พี่, someone younger is น้อง (common for calling a waiter or shop assistant), and older people are ลุง ‘uncle’ or ป้า ‘auntie’.
The same word can mean ‘I’ when the speaker uses it about themselves: พี่ไปก่อนนะ ‘I’m (your older sibling) going now.’
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- พี่ครับ ขอเมนูหน่อย
Excuse me (to an older staff member), the menu please. - น้องคะ เก็บเงินด้วยค่ะ
(to a young waiter) The bill, please. - ป้าขายมะม่วงกิโลละเท่าไร
Auntie, how much are the mangoes per kilo? - พี่ไปก่อนนะ แล้วเจอกัน
I’m off now, see you. (speaker is older)
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Choosing the right term shows respect. If unsure of someone’s age, พี่ is the safe, friendly choice for adults; คุณ is safer in formal or business settings.
