มาก / มาก ๆ

“Very, a lot”

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • Adj / V + มาก
  • Adj / V + มาก ๆ (stronger, spoken)
  • V + Object + มาก
  • ไม่ + Adj + มาก (not very …)

Usage การใช้

มาก means ‘very’ or ‘a lot’. It always comes after the adjective or verb, never before it.

When the verb has an object, the object comes first and มาก goes at the end: ชอบกาแฟมาก ‘like coffee a lot’.

Doubling it as มาก ๆ makes it stronger and more conversational. With ไม่ in front of the adjective it means ‘not very’.

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. อาหารร้านนี้อร่อยมาก
The food at this restaurant is very good.
  2. ผมชอบภาษาไทยมาก
    I like Thai a lot.
  3. วันนี้ฝนตกหนักมาก ๆ
    It’s raining really hard today.
  4. ห้องนี้ไม่ใหญ่มาก แต่สะอาด
This room isn’t very big, but it’s clean.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

English speakers often put มาก before the adjective, as in ‘very good’. In Thai the order is always the reverse.

For a large quantity of something, everyday speech prefers เยอะ (คนเยอะ ‘lots of people’). มาก also works but sounds a little more formal: วันนี้มีคนมาก.

✗ Unnatural: เขามากใจดี

✓ Use instead: เขาใจดีมาก (He is very kind.)

Why: มาก follows the adjective.

✗ Unnatural: ฉันชอบมากแมว

✓ Use instead: ฉันชอบแมวมาก (I like cats a lot.)

Why: The object (แมว) comes straight after the verb; มาก goes last.
