กว่า
Comparative “more … than”
Structure โครงสร้าง
- A + Adj + กว่า + B
- A + Adj + กว่า + B + amount (taller by …)
- A + V + (O) + Adv + กว่า + B
- Adj + กว่านี้ / กว่านั้น (more … than this / that)
- Adj + กว่า + มาก (much more …)
Usage การใช้
กว่า directly after an adjective makes the comparative: สูงกว่า ‘taller’, ถูกกว่า ‘cheaper’. There is no separate ‘more’ word for adjectives.
The difference comes after: สูงกว่า 5 เซนติเมตร ‘5 cm taller’. ‘Much …-er’ is Adj + กว่า + มาก.
กว่านี้ ‘than this’ is useful when shopping: มีถูกกว่านี้ไหม ‘Do you have anything cheaper?’
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- พี่สูงกว่าน้อง
The older brother is taller than the younger one. - วันนี้ร้อนกว่าเมื่อวานมาก
Today is much hotter than yesterday. - มีสีอื่นที่สวยกว่านี้ไหมคะ
Do you have a nicer colour than this? - เขาพูดภาษาไทยเก่งกว่าผม
He speaks Thai better than I do.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: พี่มากสูงกว่าน้อง
✓ Use instead: พี่สูงกว่าน้องมาก (The older brother is much taller.)
Why: ‘Much’ goes at the end: Adj + กว่า + B + มาก.
