ก็ (then, consequence)
Marks the result/main clause after
Structure
- condition (no conjunction) + ก็ + result
Usage
In a two-part sentence, ก็ marks the start of the main (result) clause: ‘then, so’. It appears after ถ้า (if), พอ (as soon as), เมื่อ (when), แม้ว่า (although), ไม่ว่า (no matter), ต่อให้ (even if) and others.
In speech the conjunction can even be dropped, so ก็ alone shows the condition–result link: ไม่ชอบก็ไม่ต้องกิน ‘If you don’t like it, don’t eat it.’
If the result clause has a subject, it comes before ก็.
Examples
If you’re tired, take a rest. -
When work finished, I went home. -
Even though it was expensive, he bought it.
If you don’t like it, you don’t have to eat it.
Subtle differences
(If you don’t go, I won’t go either.)
Why: The subject of the result clause comes before ก็.
