คือ
“Is / namely”; identity and definition. คือ cannot be negated with ไม่; its negative is ไม่ใช่
Structure โครงสร้าง
- A + คือ + B (A is B: identity, definition)
- นี่คือ + N (This is …: introducing)
- A + ไม่ใช่ + B (negative)
Usage การใช้
คือ means ‘is, equals, namely’. It identifies or defines: the two sides refer to the same thing. It is common for introductions (นี่คือ…), definitions and explanations.
It is negated with ไม่ใช่, never ไม่คือ (TG087).
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- นี่คือพ่อของผม
This is my father. - ‘แมว’ คือสัตว์ชนิดหนึ่ง
‘แมว’ is a kind of animal. - เมืองหลวงของไทยคือกรุงเทพฯ
The capital of Thailand is Bangkok. - ปัญหาคือเราไม่มีเวลา
The problem is (that) we don’t have time.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
คือ also works as a discourse marker meaning ‘well… / I mean’ (TG294).
✗ Unnatural: ผมคือครู (telling someone your job)
✓ Use instead: ผมเป็นครู (I’m a teacher.)
Why: For a job or role, use เป็น. ผมคือครู sounds like ‘I am the teacher (you’re looking for)’.
