ที่ (relative)
“Who, which, that” (relative clause)
Structure โครงสร้าง
- N + ที่ + clause (the N who / which / that …)
Usage การใช้
ที่ after a noun starts a relative clause, like ‘who, which, that’. It is used for people and things in both speech and writing: คนที่ใส่เสื้อแดง ‘the person who is wearing red’. The clause comes after the noun.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- คนที่ใส่เสื้อแดงคือพี่ผม
The person in the red shirt is my brother. - ร้านที่เราไปเมื่อวานอร่อยมาก
The restaurant we went to yesterday was really good. - หนังสือที่คุณให้ผมสนุกมาก
The book you gave me is a lot of fun. - มีอะไรที่ผมช่วยได้ไหม
Is there anything I can help with?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- ที่ vs ซึ่ง (TG318): ที่ is everyday and identifies which one; ซึ่ง is formal and often adds extra information. In speech, use ที่.
- ที่ is not dropped like English ‘that’: ร้านเราไปเมื่อวาน is not natural; say ร้านที่เราไปเมื่อวาน.
✗ Unnatural: ร้านเราไปเมื่อวานอร่อยมาก
✓ Use instead: ร้านที่เราไปเมื่อวานอร่อยมาก (The restaurant we went to yesterday was really good.)
Why: Thai needs ที่ to link the noun and the relative clause.
