เกินไป
“Too (excessive)”; often shortened to ไป (แพงไป “too expensive”)
Structure โครงสร้าง
- Adj + เกินไป
- Adj + ไป (shortened, spoken)
- Adj + (เกิน)ไป + หน่อย (softened: ‘a bit too …’)
- V + มาก/น้อย/เยอะ + เกินไป
Usage การใช้
เกินไป means ‘too’ in the sense of ‘more than is good or wanted’. It always carries a negative judgement.
In speech it is often shortened to ไป: แพงไป ‘too expensive’. Adding หน่อย softens a complaint: ใหญ่ไปหน่อย ‘a bit too big’.
With a verb, say how much is too much with มาก / เยอะ / น้อย: กินเยอะเกินไป ‘eat too much’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- กาแฟแก้วนี้หวานเกินไป
This coffee is too sweet. - เสื้อตัวนี้ใหญ่ไปหน่อย มีไซซ์เล็กกว่านี้ไหมคะ
This shirt is a bit too big. Do you have a smaller size? - อย่ากินเยอะเกินไปนะ เดี๋ยวปวดท้อง
Don’t eat too much, or you’ll get a stomach ache. - ห้องนี้แพงเกินไปสำหรับผม
This room is too expensive for me.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
เกิน by itself with a number means ‘over, more than’, not ‘too’: เกินสองร้อยบาท ‘over 200 baht’.
Because เกินไป means the quality is a problem, it sounds odd with a quality that cannot be ‘too much’ in the situation. To praise, use มาก.
✗ Unnatural: เขาพูดเกินไปเร็ว
✓ Use instead: เขาพูดเร็วเกินไป (He speaks too fast.)
Why: เกินไป comes after the adjective/adverb it modifies.
