แต่
“But”
Structure โครงสร้าง
- clause + แต่ + clause
- clause + แต่ + (S) + ก็ + V (but still …)
- clause + แต่ว่า + clause (spoken)
Usage การใช้
แต่ means ‘but’ and introduces a contrast. Adding ก็ in the second clause gives ‘but … still / anyway’.
In speech แต่ว่า is common at the start of the second clause.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- อร่อยแต่แพง
It’s delicious but expensive. - ผมอยากไป แต่ไม่ว่าง
I’d like to go, but I’m not free. - บ้านเล็ก แต่สะอาดมาก
The house is small, but very clean. - เขาพูดไทยไม่เก่ง แต่ก็พยายามพูดทุกวัน
He doesn’t speak Thai well, but he still tries every day.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
แต่ has other meanings in other positions: after a verb it means ‘only, nothing but’ (กินแต่ผัก, TG060), and with a time it means ‘early’ or ‘since’ (มาแต่เช้า ‘came early’).
For a result that is the opposite of what was expected, Thai can add กลับ (TG244): ฉันเตือนแล้ว แต่เขากลับไม่ฟัง.
