Adjectives as predicates (no "to be")
Adjectives act as verbs; no เป็น before them
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + Adj (no ‘be’)
- S + ไม่ + Adj
- S + Adj + มาก / จัง / ไหม
Usage การใช้
In Thai, adjectives behave like verbs. They come directly after the subject with no word for ‘be’: ฉันหิว ‘I (am) hungry.’ They are negated with ไม่ and questioned with ไหม, just like verbs.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ฉันหิว
I’m hungry. - ห้องนี้สะอาด
This room is clean. - วันนี้ไม่ร้อน
It isn’t hot today. - อาหารอร่อยไหม
Is the food good?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: ห้องนี้เป็นสะอาด
✓ Use instead: ห้องนี้สะอาด (This room is clean.)
Why: เป็น cannot stand before an adjective. The adjective is the predicate.
To describe a person’s lasting character, Thai often uses เป็นคน + Adj (TG030): เขาเป็นคนใจดี.
