TG274Intermediate

“As soon as / when…, (then)…”

Structure

  • พอ + clause, + (S) + ก็ + V
  • พอ + V + ปุ๊บ + (S) + ก็ + V + ปั๊บ (the instant …, colloquial)

Usage

ก็ … means ‘as soon as, when’: one event follows immediately after another. It is very common in speech, for both past and future.

The second clause is normally marked with ก็, and its subject comes before ก็.

Do not confuse it with พอ ‘enough’ (TG236).

Examples

As soon as I got home, I went straight to bed.
As soon as the rain stopped, the kids went out to play.
When he saw his mother, he burst into tears.
The moment I get paid, it’s all gone.

Subtle differences

Leaving out ก็ (พอถึงบ้าน ผมนอนเลย) is possible in fast speech but sounds choppy.

(As soon as I finished eating, I went to work.)

Why: The subject comes before ก็.
