Answering yes/no
Thai answers yes/no by repeating the verb, not with a single “yes” word
Structure โครงสร้าง
- Q: … V + ไหม? → A: V (yes) / ไม่ + V (no)
- Q: … ใช่ไหม? → A: ใช่ / ไม่ใช่
- Q: … หรือยัง? → A: V + แล้ว / ยัง
- Q: … ได้ไหม? → A: ได้ / ไม่ได้
Usage การใช้
Thai has no single word for ‘yes’. You answer by repeating the verb or adjective of the question (or saying ไม่ + verb for ‘no’). ใช่ / ไม่ใช่ only answer questions about whether something is true or correct (with ใช่ไหม or about identity).
ครับ / ค่ะ alone can also mean ‘yes’ as polite agreement.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- — ชอบไหม — ชอบ / ไม่ชอบ
Do you like it? — Yes. / No. - — เป็นคนไทยใช่ไหม — ใช่ครับ
You’re Thai, right? — Yes. - — กินข้าวหรือยัง — กินแล้ว / ยัง
Have you eaten? — Yes. / Not yet. - — ช่วยหน่อยได้ไหม — ได้ค่ะ
Could you help me? — Sure.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: — คุณชอบอาหารไทยไหม — ใช่
✓ Use instead: — คุณชอบอาหารไทยไหม — ชอบครับ (Do you like Thai food? — Yes, I do.)
Why: ใช่ answers ‘is it true / correct?’. To answer a ไหม question, repeat the verb.
