Topic–comment sentences
A topic noun is followed by a second noun and its predicate; Thai prefers this form (บ้านหลังนี้ค่าเช่าไม่แพง rather than ค่าเช่าบ้านหลังนี้ไม่แพง)
Structure โครงสร้าง
- Topic + (Subject) + Predicate
- N (topic) + N2 (part / attribute) + Adj / V
Usage การใช้
Thai likes to start with a topic, then say something about one of its parts or aspects. บ้านหลังนี้ค่าเช่าไม่แพง literally ‘this house, the rent isn’t expensive’. This is often more natural than one long noun phrase (ค่าเช่าบ้านหลังนี้ไม่แพง). The same pattern describes people: เขาใจดี ‘he is kind (heart good)’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ผ้านี้สีไม่ตก
This cloth is colourfast. - บ้านหลังนี้ค่าเช่าไม่แพง
The rent on this house isn’t expensive. - ร้านนี้อาหารอร่อยแต่บริการช้า
At this restaurant the food is good but the service is slow. - ช้างตัวนี้งวงยาวมาก
This elephant’s trunk is very long.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- Both orders are grammatical. ค่าเช่าบ้านหลังนี้ไม่แพง is fine, just heavier; the topic order sounds more like everyday Thai.
