พอ / พอสมควร

“Enough; reasonably”

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • N + พอ / มี + N + พอ
  • Adj + พอ (+ สำหรับ …)
  • Adj + พอที่จะ + V
  • Adj / V + พอสมควร (fairly, reasonably)
  • พอแล้ว (that’s enough)

Usage การใช้

พอ means ‘enough’ and follows the noun or adjective: เงินไม่พอ ‘not enough money’, ใหญ่พอ ‘big enough’.

To say ‘enough to do something’, use พอที่จะ + V.

พอสมควร means ‘reasonably, to a fair degree’ and also follows the adjective or verb phrase.

Do not confuse this with พอ … ก็ ‘as soon as’ (TG274) or พอ ๆ กับ ‘about the same as’ (TG225).

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. เงินไม่พอ
    There isn’t enough money.
  2. ห้องนี้ใหญ่พอสำหรับสี่คน
This room is big enough for four people.
  3. เขาพูดภาษาไทยได้พอสมควร
    He speaks Thai reasonably well.
  4. พอแล้ว ไม่ต้องใส่น้ำตาลอีก
    That’s enough, no more sugar.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

✗ Unnatural: ผมไม่มีพอเงิน

✓ Use instead: ผมมีเงินไม่พอ (I don’t have enough money.)

Why: พอ follows the noun. The usual pattern is มี + N + (ไม่)พอ.
