Common classifiers
Each noun class has its own classifier (people, animals, things, books, cars…)
Structure โครงสร้าง
- คน people · ตัว animals, clothes, tables, chairs · อัน small things (general)
- ใบ bags, cups, leaves, tickets · เล่ม books, knives · คัน cars, bikes, umbrellas
- หลัง houses · ลูก fruit, balls · แก้ว glasses (of drink) · จาน plates (of food)
- ชิ้น pieces · ขวด bottles · เครื่อง machines, phones · ห้อง rooms
Usage การใช้
Each noun class has its own classifier, based on shape, type or use. Many containers and units also act as classifiers: แก้ว for a glass of drink, จาน for a plate of food, ขวด for a bottle.
When you don’t know the right classifier, อัน works for many small objects, and the noun itself can act as a classifier for some words: ห้องสามห้อง ‘three rooms’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- รถสองคัน / หนังสือสามเล่ม
two cars / three books - ซื้อเสื้อสองตัว
I bought two shirts. - ขอข้าวผัดหนึ่งจานกับน้ำส้มสองแก้ว
One plate of fried rice and two glasses of orange juice, please. - โทรศัพท์เครื่องนี้ใหม่
This phone is new.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
ตัว is used for animals but also for clothes, tables and chairs: เสื้อตัวนี้ ‘this shirt’, โต๊ะสองตัว ‘two tables’.
✗ Unnatural: ผมมีลูกสองตัว
✓ Use instead: ผมมีลูกสองคน (I have two children.)
Why: People always take คน. ตัว is for animals and objects; using it for people is insulting.
