Telling time (โมง / ทุ่ม / ตี)
Thai six-hour clock divisions
Structure โครงสร้าง
- 1–5 a.m.: ตี + 1–5 (ตีหนึ่ง … ตีห้า)
- 6–11 a.m.: number + โมง(เช้า) (หกโมงเช้า … สิบเอ็ดโมง)
- noon: เที่ยง; 1–3 p.m.: บ่าย + number + โมง
- 4–6 p.m.: number + โมงเย็น; 7–11 p.m.: number + ทุ่ม; midnight: เที่ยงคืน
- กี่โมง ? (what time?)
Usage การใช้
Everyday Thai divides the day into six-hour blocks with different words. Morning hours use โมง, early afternoon บ่าย … โมง, late afternoon … โมงเย็น, evening ทุ่ม (1–5 ทุ่ม = 7–11 p.m.), and the small hours ตี.
Half past is ครึ่ง: สองทุ่มครึ่ง ‘8:30 p.m.’. Official times use the 24-hour clock with นาฬิกา: 20.00 น.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- บ่ายสองโมง / สองทุ่ม / ตีสาม
2 p.m. / 8 p.m. / 3 a.m. - ตอนนี้กี่โมงแล้ว
What time is it now? - ร้านเปิดเก้าโมงเช้า ปิดสองทุ่ม
The shop opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. - นัดกันบ่ายสามโมงครึ่งนะ
Let’s meet at 3:30 p.m.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Morning hours can be counted two ways: from midnight (เจ็ดโมง ‘7 a.m.’, แปดโมง ‘8 a.m.’) or from 6 a.m. (โมงเช้า ‘7 a.m.’, สองโมงเช้า ‘8 a.m.’ … ห้าโมงเช้า ‘11 a.m.’). Both are common.
✗ Unnatural: ห้าโมงเช้า (meaning 5 a.m.)
✓ Use instead: ตีห้า (5 a.m.)
Why: ห้าโมงเช้า is 11 a.m. (the fifth hour after 6 a.m.). The hours from 1 to 5 a.m. use ตี.
