“Only when, only if”
Structure
- S + จะ + V + (ก็)ต่อเมื่อ + clause (only when / only if)
Usage
ต่อเมื่อ (often ก็ต่อเมื่อ) means ‘only when, only if’. The required condition comes after it, at the end of the sentence.
To put the condition first, use
Examples
He’ll go only if I go too.
You’ll pass only if you study hard. -
I’ll believe it only when I see it with my own eyes. -
We often realise the value of things only when we lose them.
Subtle differences
(He’ll go only if I go too.)
Why: ต่อเมื่อ + condition comes at the end. To put the condition first, use ถึงจะ.
