Basic word order: S + V + O
Subject, verb, object, as in English; modifiers follow what they modify
Structure โครงสร้าง
- Subject + Verb + Object
- Subject + Verb + Object + (adverb / time / place)
- Noun + modifier (adjective, possessor, demonstrative)
Usage การใช้
The basic Thai order is the same as English: subject, verb, object. The big difference is that modifiers come after what they modify: บ้านใหญ่ ‘big house’, รถของผม ‘my car’, คนนั้น ‘that person’. Time words can go at the start or the end (TG148).
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- คนไทยกินข้าว
Thai people eat rice. - ผมชอบหนังเรื่องนี้มาก
I like this film a lot. - น้องสาวผมเรียนภาษาจีนที่มหาวิทยาลัย
My younger sister studies Chinese at university. - พรุ่งนี้เราจะไปทะเล
Tomorrow we’ll go to the beach.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: ผมใหญ่บ้านมี
✓ Use instead: ผมมีบ้านใหญ่ (I have a big house.)
Why: The verb comes before the object, and the adjective comes after the noun.
- The subject is often dropped when it is clear (TG017): กินข้าวหรือยัง ‘(Have you) eaten yet?’
