ตั้ง (as many as)
“As much/many as” (surprise at a large amount)
Structure
- ตั้ง + number + CLF / unit (+ เลย / แน่ะ)
- ตั้ง + เยอะ / นาน (so much / so long)
Usage
ตั้ง before an amount shows surprise that the amount is large: ‘as many as, a whole …’. It is the opposite of แค่ … เอง, which stresses that an amount is small.
It often ends with เลย or a surprised question with เหรอ.
Examples
This shirt costs a whole three thousand baht? -
He waited as long as two hours. -
This house has as many as five bedrooms. -
I’ve studied Thai for a full three years, but I still don’t speak it well.
Subtle differences
Don’t confuse ตั้ง with the verb ตั้ง ‘to set up, to place’ or with ตั้งแต่ ‘since, from’ (TG278).
✗ Unnatural:
(Only two baht.)
Why: ตั้ง means ‘a large amount’ and เอง means ‘a small amount’, so they contradict each other.
