Reduplication (ๆ)
Plurality, softening or intensity (เด็ก ๆ, ช้า ๆ, ดี ๆ)
Structure โครงสร้าง
- word + ๆ (said twice)
- N + ๆ (plural, a group)
- Adj / Adv + ๆ (softening or emphasis)
Usage การใช้
The mark ๆ (ไม้ยมก) means ‘say the word twice’. With nouns it shows plurality or variety: เด็ก ๆ ‘children’, เพื่อน ๆ ‘friends’. With adjectives and adverbs it can soften (ช้า ๆ ‘slowly, gently’) or emphasise, especially with a stressed tone on the first word (ดี๊ดี ‘really good’). With a command it adds ‘nicely, properly’: นั่งดี ๆ ‘sit properly’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- เด็ก ๆ กำลังเล่นอยู่ข้างนอก
The children are playing outside. - พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยได้ไหม
Could you speak slowly, please? - ขอใหญ่ ๆ หน่อยนะ
A big one, please. - เราเพิ่งเจอกันเมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้
We met recently.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- Not every word can be doubled: personal pronouns and most verbs are not doubled (ไป ๆ is not ‘go many times’).
- With numbers and classifiers reduplication is unusual: say เด็กสามคน, not เด็ก ๆ สามคน.
