Adverbs after the verb

Manner adverbs follow the verb (and object)

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • S + V + (Object) + Adverb
  • S + V + Object + ได้ + Adverb (manner of an ability)
  • V + Adverb-reduplicated (ช้า ๆ, ดี ๆ) in requests

Usage การใช้

Most Thai adjectives also work as manner adverbs with no change in form: เร็ว ‘fast/quickly’, ช้า ‘slow/slowly’, ดี ‘good/well’, เก่ง ‘skilful/skilfully’, ชัด ‘clear/clearly’.

The adverb comes after the verb and after its object. To describe how well someone can do something, put ได้ after the object and the adverb after ได้: พูดไทยได้ดี.

Reduplicated adverbs such as ช้า ๆ and ดี ๆ are common in requests and sound gentler.

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. เขาขับรถเร็ว
    He drives fast.
  2. กรุณาพูดช้า ๆ หน่อยครับ
    Please speak slowly.
  3. น้องร้องเพลงเพราะมาก
    My younger sister sings beautifully.
  4. เขาพูดภาษาไทยได้ชัดมาก
    He speaks Thai very clearly.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

The usual mistake is putting the object after ได้, because English says ‘can speak Thai well’. In Thai the object stays next to the verb.

✗ Unnatural: เขาเร็วขับรถ

✓ Use instead: เขาขับรถเร็ว (He drives fast.)

Why: Manner adverbs follow the verb phrase.

✗ Unnatural: ผมพูดได้ภาษาไทยดี

✓ Use instead: ผมพูดภาษาไทยได้ดี (I speak Thai well.)

Why: Object (ภาษาไทย) comes before ได้.
