Noun + number + classifier
Counting always needs a classifier
Structure โครงสร้าง
- N + number + CLF (two cars: รถ สอง คัน)
- N + CLF + หนึ่ง / หนึ่ง + CLF (one N)
- กี่ + CLF ? (how many?)
Usage การใช้
When you count nouns in Thai, you need a classifier (ลักษณนาม) after the number. The order is noun + number + classifier: ครูห้าคน ‘five teachers’, รถสองคัน ‘two cars’. The classifier depends on the kind of noun (TG040).
For ‘one’, both orders are used: แมวตัวหนึ่ง ‘a cat / one cat’ and แมวหนึ่งตัว ‘one cat (exactly)’ (TG051).
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ครูห้าคน
five teachers - ผมมีแมวสองตัว
I have two cats. - ขอกาแฟสามแก้วครับ
Three coffees, please. - บ้านหลังนี้มีห้องนอนสี่ห้อง
This house has four bedrooms.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: ผมมีสองแมว
✓ Use instead: ผมมีแมวสองตัว (I have two cats.)
Why: The number cannot go before the noun, and a classifier is required.
