ไม่ค่อย
“Not very / not often”
Structure โครงสร้าง
- ไม่ค่อย + V (rarely, not often)
- ไม่ค่อย + Adj (not very)
Usage การใช้
ไม่ค่อย softens a negative: ‘not very’ with adjectives, ‘hardly, not often, not much’ with verbs. Thai speakers use it a lot to avoid sounding blunt: ไม่ค่อยอร่อย is gentler than ไม่อร่อย.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- วันนี้ไม่ค่อยหิว
I’m not very hungry today. - เขาไม่ค่อยมาที่นี่
He rarely comes here. - ผมพูดไทยไม่ค่อยเก่ง
I don’t speak Thai very well. - ช่วงนี้ไม่ค่อยว่าง
I’m not very free these days.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
ไม่ค่อย is placed before the verb or adjective, even when English puts ‘very’ elsewhere: ผมพูดไทยไม่ค่อยเก่ง.
To soften further, add เท่าไร (TG091): ไม่ค่อยหิวเท่าไร ‘not really that hungry’.
✗ Unnatural: ไม่หิวค่อย
✓ Use instead: ไม่ค่อยหิว (I’m not very hungry.)
Why: ค่อย always follows ไม่ directly, before the adjective.
