ถูก
Passive, traditionally for unpleasant events
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + ถูก + (agent) + V (be …-ed by)
- S + ถูก + V (be …-ed)
Usage การใช้
ถูก forms the passive. Traditionally it is used for things that happen to someone and are unpleasant or unwanted: being bitten, robbed, scolded, fired. The agent, if mentioned, comes right after ถูก.
In news and formal writing, ถูก is now also used more neutrally, partly under English influence.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- เขาถูกหมากัด
He was bitten by a dog. - กระเป๋าผมถูกขโมย
My bag was stolen. - นักการเมืองคนนั้นถูกจับเมื่อวาน
That politician was arrested yesterday. - ผมถูกเจ้านายต่อว่า
I got told off by my boss.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
For pleasant events, an active sentence or ได้รับ (TG189) usually sounds more natural than ถูก: ครูชมผม / ผมได้รับคำชมจากครู ‘The teacher praised me.’ The pattern ถูก … โดย + agent sounds like translated English.
ถูก also means ‘cheap’ and ‘correct’ in other contexts.
