- ชื่ออะไร / เรียกว่าอะไร ? (what’s it called?)
Usage การใช้
ชื่อ is both the noun ‘name’ and the verb ‘to be named’: ผมชื่อทอม ‘My name is Tom.’ ชื่อว่า is a slightly fuller form.
เรียกว่า means ‘is called’ and is used for things, words and terms: ภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไร ‘What’s it called in Thai?’
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ผมชื่อทอมครับ
My name is Tom. - ร้านนี้ชื่อว่าอะไร
What’s this shop called? - อันนี้ภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไร
What’s this called in Thai? - ผลไม้นี้เรียกว่ามังคุด
This fruit is called mangosteen.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
ชื่อ names a specific person, place or thing; เรียกว่า gives the word for something. คุณชื่ออะไร = ‘What’s your name?’ อันนี้เรียกว่าอะไร = ‘What’s this called?’
✗ Unnatural: ผมเป็นชื่อทอม
✓ Use instead: ผมชื่อทอม (My name is Tom.)
Why: ชื่อ is itself the verb. No เป็น is needed.
