“If…, then…”
Structure
- ถ้า + condition + (S) + ก็ + result
- ถ้า + condition + S + จะ + V
- result + ถ้า + condition
+ (S) + ก็คง + … (if …, would probably …)
Usage
ถ้า means ‘if’. The result clause is usually marked with ก็ (TG305), or with จะ for a future result.
If the result clause has a subject, the subject comes before ก็ or จะ: ถ้าฝนตก เราก็อยู่บ้าน.
The condition can also come second:
Thai uses the same ถ้า for imaginary or past situations. Context and words like คง show it: ถ้ารู้ก่อนก็คงไม่มา ‘If I’d known, I probably wouldn’t have come.’
Examples
If you’re free, come and visit. -
If it rains, we won’t go.
If you’re tired, take a rest. -
I’ll come along if you go.
Subtle differences
(If it rains, we’ll stay home.)
Why: The subject comes before ก็.
More examples
If I’d known, I probably wouldn’t have come.
