ไหม / มั้ย
Yes/no question particle. Implies a free choice or asks for an evaluation, so it suits invitations, offers and adjective questions; it is not used for past events or fixed schedules (use หรือ / หรือเปล่า)
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + V / Adj + ไหม ?
- (S) + จะ + V + ไหม ? (offers, invitations, future)
- Spoken spelling: มั้ย
Usage การใช้
ไหม turns a statement into a yes/no question. It suits questions about likes, wishes, ability, states and future actions, and it is the normal particle for offers and invitations: ไปด้วยกันไหม ‘Shall we go together?’
In speech it is pronounced with a high tone and often written มั้ย.
To answer, repeat the verb (TG075): — ชอบไหม — ชอบ / ไม่ชอบ.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ชอบอาหารไทยไหม
Do you like Thai food? - เผ็ดไหม
Is it spicy? - พรุ่งนี้ไปเที่ยวด้วยกันไหม
Do you want to go out together tomorrow? - รับกาแฟไหมคะ
Would you like some coffee?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
ไหม vs หรือเปล่า (TG063): for a completed past action, Thai normally uses หรือเปล่า or หรือยัง, not ไหม.
ไหม asks about something open: a wish, an offer, a general state. To check a fact that either happened or didn’t, especially in the past, หรือเปล่า is the more natural choice: เมื่อวานคุณไปโรงเรียนหรือเปล่า ‘Did you go to school yesterday?’
ไหม is not used after a negative: ‘Don’t you like it?’ is ไม่ชอบเหรอ or ไม่ชอบหรือ (TG063, TG079).
