Compound words (คำประสม) and pairs (คำซ้อน)
Building vocabulary with compounds and paired synonyms
Structure โครงสร้าง
- N + N (compound: new meaning)
- word + synonym (คำซ้อน: paired words)
Usage การใช้
Thai builds many words by putting words together. In compounds (คำประสม), the parts make a new meaning: น้ำ ‘water’ + แข็ง ‘hard’ → น้ำแข็ง ‘ice’; รถ + ไฟ → รถไฟ ‘train’. In paired words (คำซ้อน), two words with similar meanings combine for a fuller or more general sense: บ้านเรือน ‘houses, dwellings’, เสื้อผ้า ‘clothes’, ญาติพี่น้อง ‘relatives’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ขอน้ำแข็งเพิ่มหน่อย
Some more ice, please. - เรานั่งรถไฟไปเชียงใหม่
We took the train to Chiang Mai. - ผมต้องไปซื้อเสื้อผ้าใหม่
I need to buy new clothes. - ญาติพี่น้องมากันเต็มบ้าน
The house is full of relatives.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- The order in a pair is fixed: เสื้อผ้า, not ผ้าเสื้อ. Swapping the parts gives a non-word.
