“Because…, (therefore)…”; reason-first order

Structure

  • เนื่องจาก + reason, + S + จึง + result (very formal)
  • ที่ + result + ก็เพราะ + reason (the reason that … is …)

Usage

In English you cannot say ‘Because it rained, so I stayed home’, but in Thai this paired pattern is normal. When the reason comes first, the result clause is usually marked with จึง or ก็เลย / เลย.

จึง is formal or written. It is used in news, announcements, essays and careful speech.

ก็เลย (or the shorter เลย) is the everyday spoken form.

In both cases the subject of the result clause comes before

Examples

Because the traffic was bad, I was late. (formal)
Because the traffic was bad, I was late. (spoken)
Because of the heavy rain, the match was postponed.
He went to bed late last night, so he’s been sleepy all day.

Subtle differences

จึง vs ก็เลย is mainly about register. In casual conversation จึง sounds stiff, like reading aloud. In a formal letter or report ก็เลย sounds too chatty.

เพราะ can be dropped in speech when the link is obvious: รถติด ผมก็เลยมาสาย.

Keep เพราะ on the reason. Putting it on the result reverses the meaning.

ก็เพราะ … explains the reason for something already known: ที่ผมมาสายก็เพราะรถติด ‘The reason I’m late is the traffic.’

(Because of the traffic, I was late.)

Why: The subject comes before จึง.

(Because of the traffic, I was late.)

Why: The subject comes before ก็เลย as well.

✗ Unnatural: เนื่องจากงบประมาณไม่พอ โครงการก็เลยต้องหยุด (in a formal report)

(Due to insufficient budget, the project has been suspended.)

Why: In formal writing use จึง. ก็เลย is conversational.

(I was late because of the traffic.)

Why: เพราะ marks the reason, not the result.
