Serial verbs
Verbs chain without conjunctions
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + V1 + V2 (+ O)
- S + V1 + O + V2 (+ V3)
Usage การใช้
Thai strings verbs together with no word for ‘and’ or ‘to’. The verbs follow the order in which things happen: ไปกินข้าว ‘go (and) eat’, นั่งรอ ‘sit (and) wait’. Tense and negation words go before the whole chain, and objects come right after the verb they belong to.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ไปกินข้าวกันไหม
Shall we go and eat? - เขานั่งรอเพื่อนอยู่หน้าร้าน
He is sitting waiting for his friend in front of the shop. - แม่ออกไปซื้อกับข้าวที่ตลาด
Mum went out to buy food at the market. - ผมจะกลับไปนอนแล้ว
I’m going back to sleep now.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- ไม่ usually goes before the first verb and negates the whole chain: ผมไม่ไปกินข้าว ‘I’m not going to eat.’ Putting it in the middle changes the meaning: ไปไม่กินข้าว sounds broken; to say ‘went but didn’t eat’ use ไปแต่ไม่ได้กิน.
- Adding และ between verbs (ไปและกินข้าว) is grammatical but sounds like a written list. In speech the bare chain is normal.
