“By the time …, (already) …”; stresses that something took a long time
Structure
- กว่า + (S) + จะ + V, + (S) + ก็ + … (by the time …)
Usage
ก็ means ‘by the time …, (it was already) …’. It stresses that something took a long time or a lot of effort before it happened.
Examples
It was almost midnight by the time the kids went to bed. -
By the time we found a parking spot, the film had already started. -
By the time he came, we’d already finished eating. -
It took years to be able to speak Thai this well.
Subtle differences
กว่าจะ is different from กว่า ‘more than’ (TG216). Here กว่า starts a time clause and always pairs with จะ.
(By the time he came, we’d already eaten.)
Why: The pattern needs จะ after the subject: กว่า + S + จะ + V.
