Usage การใช้
ขอ means ‘ask for, request’. With a noun it means ‘May I have …?’, used for ordering and asking: ขอน้ำหน่อย. With a verb it means ‘Let me …’ or ‘May I …?’: ขอดูหน่อย ‘Let me see.’
It appears in many polite phrases: ขอโทษ ‘sorry’, ขอบคุณ ‘thank you’, ขอให้ … ‘(I wish) may you …’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ขอน้ำเปล่าหนึ่งขวด
A bottle of water, please. - ขอดูเมนูหน่อยครับ
Could I see the menu, please? - ขอถ่ายรูปได้ไหมคะ
May I take a photo? - ขอให้โชคดีนะ
Good luck! (May you have good luck.)
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
ขอ + V asks permission for yourself to do something. To ask someone else to do something, use ช่วย (TG173).
- ขอปิดประตูหน่อย literally asks permission (‘let me close the door’), though in context it can also be a request for the door to be closed. ช่วยปิดประตูหน่อย makes it clear you want the other person to do it.
