Structure โครงสร้าง

- S + V (+ O) + ไม่ได้ (cannot, not allowed)
- V + ได้ไหม ? (can / may …?: TG066)
Usage การใช้
ได้ after the verb phrase means ‘can’: ability, possibility or permission. The object comes before ได้: พูดภาษาไทยได้ ‘can speak Thai’. The negative is V + ไม่ได้.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- พูดภาษาไทยได้
I can speak Thai. - ที่นี่สูบบุหรี่ไม่ได้
You can’t smoke here. - พรุ่งนี้ผมไปได้
I can go tomorrow. - กินเผ็ดได้ไหม
Can you eat spicy food?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Thai has three ways to express ability: V + ได้ (can, in general), V + เป็น (know how to, a learned skill, TG162) and V + ไหว (physically manage, TG163). ว่ายน้ำได้ ‘can swim (here, now, allowed)’, ว่ายน้ำเป็น ‘know how to swim’, ว่ายน้ำไม่ไหวแล้ว ‘can’t swim any more (too tired)’.
✗ Unnatural: ผมได้พูดภาษาไทย (meaning ‘I can speak Thai’)
✓ Use instead: ผมพูดภาษาไทยได้ (I can speak Thai.)
Why: ได้ before the verb means ‘got to / did’ (TG130). ‘Can’ is ได้ after the verb phrase.
