ไป / มา (direction)
Direction away from / toward the speaker
Structure โครงสร้าง
- V + ไป (away from the speaker)
- V + มา (towards the speaker)
- V + O + ไป/มา
Usage การใช้
ไป and มา after a verb show direction. ไป moves away from the speaker or the point of focus; มา moves towards it. They are used with movement verbs (เดิน, วิ่ง, ส่ง, โทร) and also for time: ที่ผ่านมา ‘up to now’, ต่อไป ‘from now on’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- เดินมาทางนี้หน่อย
Walk over this way. - ผมส่งอีเมลไปแล้ว
I’ve sent the email. - เมื่อวานแม่โทรมา
Mum called (me) yesterday. - ปีที่ผ่านมาผมทำงานหนักมาก
Over the past year I worked very hard.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- The choice depends on the speaker’s position. เขาโทรมา ‘he called (me)’; ผมโทรไป ‘I called (him)’. Swapping them is not ungrammatical, but it changes who is where.
- With change of state, ไป often marks a loss or a move away from normal (หายไป ‘disappeared’, ลืมไป ‘forgot’), while มา marks arriving at the present (โตมา ‘grew up’).
