ที่ไหน / ไหน
“Where”; “which” with a classifier
Structure โครงสร้าง
- V + ที่ไหน ? (where?)
- ไป / มา + ไหน ? (where to / from?)
- N + CLF + ไหน ? (which N?)
- ไหน + ล่ะ / ดูซิ (show me, let’s see)
Usage การใช้
ที่ไหน means ‘where’ and goes at the end: ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหน. After ไป and มา, the short form ไหน is normal: ไปไหน ‘Where are you going?’.
With a classifier, ไหน means ‘which’: คนไหน ‘which person’, อันไหน ‘which one’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนครับ
Where is the restroom? - จะไปไหน
Where are you going? - ชอบแมวตัวไหน
Which cat do you like? - คุณมาจากไหน
Where are you from?
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
‘Which’ needs a classifier between the noun and ไหน.
In careful speech, ‘which’ takes a classifier between the noun and ไหน: เสื้อตัวไหน ‘which shirt’, หนังสือเล่มไหน ‘which book’. Learners should keep the classifier, even though it is sometimes dropped in fast speech.
