ว่า (that)
Complementizer after say/think/know
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + คิด / รู้ / เชื่อ / หวัง + ว่า + clause
- S + บอก / พูด + ว่า + clause (TG312)
Usage การใช้
ว่า introduces a clause after verbs of saying, thinking, knowing and feeling, like ‘that’ in English. Unlike English ‘that’, ว่า is rarely left out after these verbs.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ผมคิดว่าเขาจะมา
I think he’ll come. - รู้ว่าเขาย้ายบ้านแล้วไหม
Do you know that he’s moved house? - หวังว่าจะได้เจอกันอีก
I hope we’ll meet again. - แม่เชื่อว่าลูกทำได้
Mum believes her child can do it.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: ผมคิดเขาจะมา
✓ Use instead: ผมคิดว่าเขาจะมา (I think he’ll come.)
Why: After คิด, รู้ and similar verbs, ว่า is needed before the clause.
- ว่า also means ‘to say, to scold’ as a verb (อย่าว่าเขาเลย ‘don’t scold him’). That is a different use.
