Softened negation, “not very / not that …”. DLI ranks the degrees: ไม่ค่อย…
Structure
- ไม่ค่อย + V / Adj + เท่าไร (not really that …, mildest)
- ไม่ + V / Adj + เท่าไร (not very …)
Usage
Adding เท่าไร (spoken เท่าไหร่) at the end of a negative softens it: ‘not that …, not very …’. Thai speakers often use it to criticise gently.
From mildest to strongest:
Examples
I’m not that hungry. -
The food here isn’t that great.
He’s not really into travelling. -
The price isn’t too bad.
Subtle differences
This เท่าไร is not a question; it only softens the negative. It only appears in negative sentences.
✗ Unnatural: อาหารอร่อยเท่าไร (meaning ‘the food is quite good’)
(The food is good. / The food isn’t that great.)
Why: In a positive statement, เท่าไร can only be the question ‘how much?’.
