TG022Intermediate

Titles as pronouns

Address teachers, doctors etc. by role

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • ครู / อาจารย์ / หมอ / คุณ + (name) (as ‘you’ or ‘he / she’)
  • title + V (respectful ‘you’)

Usage การใช้

People in respected roles are addressed by their title instead of คุณ: ครู (teacher, school), อาจารย์ (university teacher, lecturer, master), หมอ (doctor). The title can be used with or without the name and replaces ‘you’.

Teachers and doctors often use the title for ‘I’ as well: ครูจะอธิบายอีกครั้ง ‘I (teacher) will explain again.’

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. อาจารย์จะไปไหมคะ
    Are you going, Professor?
  2. คุณหมอครับ ผมต้องกินยานี้กี่วัน
Doctor, how many days do I need to take this medicine?
  3. ครูสมศรีสอนภาษาไทย
    Teacher Somsri teaches Thai.
  4. ครูจะอธิบายอีกครั้งนะ
I’ll explain it again. (teacher speaking)

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

Using คุณ with a teacher or doctor is not wrong, but it sounds distant. Titles show respect.
