“Therefore”

Structure

  • reason. เพราะฉะนั้น + (S) + result
  • reason ดังนั้น + (S) + (จึง) + result (formal)
  • ฉะนั้น + result (formal, shorter)

Usage

เพราะฉะนั้น and ดังนั้น mean ‘therefore, so’. They open the result clause or sentence, after the reason has been stated.

เพราะฉะนั้น is used in both speech and writing. ดังนั้น is more formal and written, and often combines with จึง in the same clause.

Examples

There’s an exam tomorrow, so I have to study tonight.
The shop closes at 8 p.m., so we have to hurry.
Fuel prices have risen; therefore transport costs have gone up too.
He’s never been here, so don’t forget to pick him up.

Subtle differences

(It’s raining, so we’re not going.)

Why: Learners confuse it with เพราะ. เพราะฉะนั้น introduces the result, not the reason.
