ไง
“You see”, “that's why/how”; points out the obvious
Structure
- statement + ไง (you see, that’s why)
- N + ไง (there it is / it’s …, of course)
(I told you …!)
Usage
ไง at the end of a statement points out something that should be obvious: ‘you see’, ‘that’s why’, ‘there it is!’. It can sound playful, or a little impatient.
Do not confuse it with ยังไง ‘how’ (TG072), which is a question word.
Examples
I told you, didn’t I?
There it is, the shop I mentioned. - —
Why aren’t you going? — Because it’s raining, obviously. -
Here they are, the keys were in the bag all along.
Subtle differences
Because ไง implies ‘it’s obvious’, it can sound rude to superiors or strangers.
✗ Unnatural: (to a customer) —
(We close at five.)
Why: ไง suggests the customer should already know. With customers or superiors it sounds disrespectful.
