V + ออก / ไม่ออก (manage to)
With verbs of speaking, thinking, reading and breathing: “can / can't (figure out, get out)”
Structure โครงสร้าง
- V + ออก (manage to, figure out)
- V + ไม่ออก (can’t manage to)
Usage การใช้
ออก after verbs of thinking, reading, speaking, seeing and breathing means the result ‘came out’: you managed to work it out or get it out. คิดออก ‘figure out’, อ่านออก ‘can read (it)’, นึกออก ‘remember’, พูดไม่ออก ‘be lost for words’, หายใจไม่ออก ‘can’t breathe’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- ผมคิดไม่ออกว่าจะซื้ออะไรให้แม่
I can’t think what to buy for Mum. - นึกออกแล้ว ชื่อเขาคือต้น
I remember now, his name is Ton. - ลายมือหมอ อ่านไม่ออกเลย
I can’t read the doctor’s handwriting at all. - ดีใจจนพูดไม่ออก
So happy I was lost for words.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- อ่านออก ‘can read (it), is literate’ vs อ่านได้ ‘is allowed / able to read’. อ่านไม่ออก means the writing can’t be deciphered.
- ดูออก means ‘can tell (by looking)’: ดูออกว่าเขาโกหก ‘I can tell he’s lying.’
