Adj + เข้า (more! / come on)

Urges more of a quality; also “progressively more”

Structure

  • Adj / V + เข้า (urging: ‘come on, more!’)
  • Adj + เข้าไว้ (keep it up)

Usage

After an adjective, เข้า urges someone to do more of that quality: เร็วเข้า ‘hurry up!’. เข้าไว้ means ‘keep on being …’: ขยันเข้าไว้.

It can also describe something increasing over time, especially นาน ๆ เข้า ‘as time went on’.

Examples

Hurry up, or we’ll miss the bus.
Keep working hard and you’ll pass.
As time went on, he got used to Thai food.
The rain is getting heavier and heavier.

Subtle differences

For everyday change of state, ขึ้น / ลง (TG135) is more usual: ดีขึ้น ‘better’, ช้าลง ‘slower’.

✗ Unnatural:

(Slow down a bit.)

Why: Urging with เข้า suits words like เร็ว, ขยัน, อดทน. Asking someone to slow down uses ช้า ๆ or ช้าลง.
