ไม่ได้ + V
“Did not” (past), or “it's not (as you assume) that…”. For past actions, ไม่ได้ implies circumstances prevented it, while ไม่ implies a choice (ผมไม่ได้ไป vs ผมไม่ไป)
Structure โครงสร้าง
- S + ไม่ได้ + V (did not; past)
- S + ไม่ได้ + V/Adj (it’s not that …; contradicting)
- V + ไม่ได้ (cannot: TG154)
Usage การใช้
ไม่ได้ before a verb has two main uses.
1) It negates a past action: เมื่อวานไม่ได้ไปทำงาน ‘I didn’t go to work yesterday.’ It often suggests circumstances prevented it, while ไม่ + V suggests a choice: ผมไม่ได้ไป ‘I didn’t (get to) go’ vs ผมไม่ไป ‘I’m not going / I refused to go’.
2) It contradicts an assumption: ผมไม่ได้โกรธ ‘I’m not angry (as you think).’
After the verb, ไม่ได้ means ‘cannot’ (TG154): ไปไม่ได้ ‘can’t go’.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- เมื่อวานไม่ได้ไปทำงาน
I didn’t go to work yesterday. - ผมไม่ได้โกรธนะ แค่เหนื่อย
I’m not angry, just tired. - ขอโทษครับ ผมไม่ได้ตั้งใจ
Sorry, I didn’t mean to. - เขาไม่ได้เป็นครูแล้ว
He’s no longer a teacher.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Position changes the meaning: ผมไม่ได้ไป ‘I didn’t go’, but ผมไปไม่ได้ ‘I can’t go’.
For a past action that didn’t happen, ไม่ได้ + V is the usual choice: เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปทำงานเพราะป่วย. ไม่ไป can sound like a deliberate decision.
