Usage การใช้
จากนั้น and หลังจากนั้น mean ‘after that, then, next’. They are used for steps in directions, recipes and stories. ต่อมา ‘later on’ is typical of narratives.

- ตรงไปประมาณร้อยเมตร จากนั้นเลี้ยวซ้าย
Go straight for about 100 metres, then turn left. - เราไปกินข้าวก่อน หลังจากนั้นก็ไปดูหนัง
We went to eat first, and after that we saw a film. - ใส่น้ำมันลงในกระทะ จากนั้นใส่กระเทียม
Put oil in the pan, then add the garlic. - เขาเรียนจบปี 2010 หลังจากนั้นก็ไปทำงานที่ญี่ปุ่น
He graduated in 2010 and after that went to work in Japan.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
✗ Unnatural: จากนั้นผมกินข้าว ผมไปทำงาน
✓ Use instead: ผมกินข้าว จากนั้นก็ไปทำงาน (I ate, and then went to work.)
Why: จากนั้น (‘after that’) goes before the second event.
