Dropping pronouns
Subjects/objects are dropped when clear from context
Structure โครงสร้าง
- (S) + V + (O) (subject dropped)
- S + V (object dropped)
Usage การใช้
Thai drops subjects and objects whenever they are clear from context. ‘Where have you been? — (I’ve been) to the market’ is simply ไปไหนมา — ไปตลาดมา. Repeating ผม / คุณ in every sentence sounds stiff and foreign.
Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค
- — ไปไหนมา — ไปตลาดมา
Where have you been? — (I’ve been) to the market. - — ชอบไหม — ชอบ
Do (you) like (it)? — (I) like (it). - หิวแล้ว ไปกินข้าวกันเถอะ
(I’m) hungry. Let’s go eat. - เจอกุญแจแล้ว อยู่ในกระเป๋า
(I) found the keys. (They) were in the bag.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
Keep the pronoun when it is new, contrastive or needed for politeness, as when introducing yourself: ผมชื่อ… or contrasting people: ผมไป แต่เขาไม่ไป.
