Usage การใช้
แทน means ‘replace, instead’. At the end of a sentence, it means ‘instead’; before a noun it means ‘instead of’ or ‘for (someone)’: ทำแทนเพื่อน ‘do it for a friend’.

- ไม่มีแกงเขียว ผมสั่งแกงไก่แทน
No green curry, so I ordered chicken curry instead. - วันนี้ผมไปประชุมแทนหัวหน้า
Today I’m going to the meeting in place of my boss. - ใช้น้ำผึ้งแทนน้ำตาลได้
You can use honey instead of sugar. - ขอโทษแทนน้องด้วยนะ
I apologise on my brother’s behalf.
Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต
- แทนที่จะ + V means ‘instead of (doing)’: แทนที่จะนอน เขาเล่นเกม ‘instead of sleeping, he played games.’
