Personal pronouns

Pronouns vary by gender, politeness and relationship

Structure

  • I: ผม (male), ฉัน / ดิฉัน (female), เรา (we, or casual ‘I’)
  • you: คุณ (polite), เธอ (intimate / to juniors)
  • he / she / they: เขา, (ท่าน = very respectful)

Usage

Thai pronouns depend on the speaker’s gender, the relationship and the level of politeness. In polite conversation, men say ผม and women say ดิฉัน (formal) or ฉัน (neutral). คุณ is the polite ‘you’ for adults you don’t know well.

เขา covers ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘they’. เรา means ‘we’, and among friends it can also mean ‘I’.

In everyday speech, Thais often replace pronouns with kinship terms, names or titles (TG018, TG019, TG022) or drop them (TG017).

Examples

My name is Ton. (male speaker)
My name is Nan. (female speaker, polite)
    Where are you from?
He / She didn’t come today.

Subtle differences

เธอ means ‘you’ between close friends or to someone younger, and in writing it can mean ‘she’. It is not a safe polite ‘you’ for strangers; use คุณ.

✗ Unnatural: (a man introducing himself)

(My name is Tom.)

Why: A man says ผม and ครับ. ฉัน + ค่ะ marks a female speaker.
