เอง (only/just)

“Only, just (that's all)”; also “oneself”

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • (แค่) + amount + เอง (only, just: small amount)
  • S + V + เอง (by oneself)
  • Pronoun / N + เอง (it’s me / that’s the one)
  • เพิ่ง + V + เอง (only just)

Usage การใช้

เอง has three common uses.

1) At the end, after an amount, it minimises: ‘only, just, no big deal’. It is casual and often combines with แค่: แค่ร้อยบาทเอง.

2) After a verb it means ‘by oneself, personally’: ทำเอง ‘do it yourself’.

3) After a pronoun or noun it identifies: ผมเอง ‘it’s me’, นี่เอง ‘so that’s it’.

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. ร้อยบาทเอง ไม่แพงหรอก
It’s only a hundred baht, it’s not expensive.
  2. ผมทำกับข้าวเองทุกวัน
I cook for myself every day.
  3. ใครเคาะประตู — ผมเองครับ
    Who’s knocking? It’s me.
  4. เขาเพิ่งมาถึงเมื่อกี้เอง
He only just arrived a moment ago.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

เอง vs เท่านั้น: both can mean ‘only’, but เอง is casual and sounds reassuring (‘it’s nothing’), whereas เท่านั้น is neutral and emphatic and suits rules.

เอง vs ตัวเอง: เอง means ‘by oneself’ (who does the action). When the self is the object, use ตัวเอง (TG023).

✗ Unnatural: บริการนี้สำหรับสมาชิกเอง

✓ Use instead: บริการนี้สำหรับสมาชิกเท่านั้น (This service is for members only.)

Why: A restriction needs เท่านั้น. เอง only minimises an amount.

✗ Unnatural: เขารักเอง (meaning he loves himself)

✓ Use instead: เขารักตัวเอง (He loves himself.)

Why: The self as object is ตัวเอง.
