“Only, just”
Structure
- N / clause +
- N + เท่านั้นที่ + V (only X does …)
- เฉพาะ + N / time / group (+ เท่านั้น)
Usage
All three translate as ‘only’, but they do different jobs.
แค่ comes before what it limits and stresses that something is small, little or ‘no more than’: an amount, a time, or an action. It is the everyday spoken choice: แค่ห้านาที ‘just five minutes’, แค่ถามเฉย ๆ ‘just asking’.
เท่านั้น comes after what it limits. It is more emphatic and more neutral or formal, and is the word used on signs and in rules. It often pairs with แค่ or เฉพาะ: แค่ …
It singles out which group, item, time or condition is included and excludes all others: เฉพาะสมาชิก ‘members only’, เฉพาะวันอาทิตย์ ‘on Sundays only’. It does not express that an amount is small.
Examples
I only have a hundred baht. -
Just wait five minutes, that’s all.
This room is for staff only.
This shop only accepts cash.
Subtle differences
Ask yourself: am I saying ‘it’s a small amount’ (use แค่) or ‘this group and no other’ (use เฉพาะ)? Five minutes is a small amount, so ✗ เฉพาะห้านาทีเท่านั้น sounds very strange, while แค่ห้านาทีเท่านั้น is natural.
เฉพาะ cannot be used before an action to mean ‘merely’.
For rules and notices, เฉพาะ … (เท่านั้น) or … เท่านั้น is the standard wording. แค่ sounds too casual on a sign.
แต่ after a verb (V + แต่ + N, TG060) also means ‘only, nothing but’: เขากินแต่ผัก ‘He eats nothing but vegetables.’
(Only five minutes.)
Why: The point is that the time is short. That is แค่’s job. เฉพาะ selects a category and is not used for small amounts.
✗ Unnatural:
(I only have 100 baht.)
Why: A small amount of money, so use
✗ Unnatural:
✓ Use instead: แค่ถามเฉย ๆ (I’m just asking.)
Why: Only แค่ can limit an action like this.
✗ Unnatural: ที่จอดรถนี้แค่ลูกค้า (on a sign)
(Customer parking only.)
Why: Restricting a group is เฉพาะ. Signs use เฉพาะ …
