ไม่เชิง

“Not exactly, not really”

Structure โครงสร้าง

  • ไม่เชิง + V / Adj (not exactly)
  • ก็ไม่เชิง (not exactly, sort of)
  • เชิง + N (in a … way: เชิงธุรกิจ, formal)

Usage การใช้

ไม่เชิง means ‘not exactly, not really’. It partly disagrees: the statement is somewhat but not fully true. ก็ไม่เชิง on its own is a common hedge: ‘well, not exactly’.

Examples ตัวอย่างประโยค

  1. ก็ไม่เชิงกลัวหรอก
    I wasn’t exactly afraid.
  2. — คุณไม่ชอบเขาเหรอ — ก็ไม่เชิง
You don’t like him? — Not exactly.
  3. เขาไม่เชิงเป็นเพื่อน แต่ก็รู้จักกัน
He’s not exactly a friend, but we know each other.
  4. มันไม่เชิงว่าแพง แต่ไม่คุ้ม
It’s not exactly expensive, but it’s not worth it.

Subtle differences ข้อสังเกต

ไม่เชิง softens a disagreement politely. A plain ไม่ใช่ (‘no, that’s not it’) is more direct.
